Faith-Based Counseling

For clients seeking
a spiritually sensitive approach
to their emotional healing.

Faith-Based Counseling is a spiritually sensitive style of therapy provided at Morning Light Counseling, when requested by clients.  While it is an optional feature, many clients find it to be one of the most unique and powerful aspects of the healing process.

For people of faith, it can be difficult at times to locate help for emotional healing that is supportive or respectful of religious beliefs, and the values, choices, and behaviors that emerge from those beliefs.  At Morning Light Counseling, a spiritual perspective is considered to be a particularly powerful resource in the healing process, for those desiring to pursue such a course.

Spiritual sensitivity for religious clients in therapy can be important for 2 primary reasons:
1) It helps identify stresses or conflicts associated with their faith, that may be intensifying their emotional struggle, and
2) It draws on the strengths and supports of their faith experience, enhancing and facilitating the healing process.

Faith-Based Counseling
generally consists
of 3 fundamental stages:

blue steps 1-3 as puzzle pieces

Step 1: Identify

Step 2: Replace

Step 3: Assimilate

In Step 1, you and your counselor identify factors contributing to your distress, including pressures, conflicts, stresses, expectations, and other elements,  including those impacted by your faith experience.

In Step 2, your counselor helps you work through your conflicts, set goals consistent with your chosen values, and develop new skills and tools for bringing you into stronger alignment with your values, increasing your sense of inner harmony and peace.

In Step 3, with your counselor's support, you practice applying these new patterns in your life, until they become familiar and comfortable for you. As you become confident and consistent in applying these new patterns, life becomes happier and more fulfilling.

Through these 3 steps, with your counselor's guidance and support, you trade in old patterns of distress and conflict for happier new ways of feeling, thinking, and living.  Over time, therapy fades out as you become confident in maintaining these patterns on your own, with the spiritual supports you choose to continue with you on your journey.

The most common varieties of faith-based counseling provided here are:
1) LDS Counseling, and 2) Christian Counseling.

Other clients may prefer a more mainstream counseling approach, without reference to faith.
Client preference will always be the determining factor in whether or not a faith-based format is used, and to what extent.
